What an MOT advisory means

An advisory is a comment from an MOT test. It is not the same as a failure item on that test.

How to read one

The tester recorded something to watch. It might be a tyre, a brake, or corrosion. The same wording can appear again on a later test. The free report groups advisories into the latest test and older tests, and lists a theme when it appears on more than one test.

A failure item is separate. The report labels major items, dangerous items, fails, and items rectified at the test when the DVSA record includes them.

What to do next

Use the advisory as a prompt to look at that part of the car. It is not a measurement of how soon the part will fail. Run the free report, then decide if you need Factory X Extras, Service X History or Provenance X Check.

Questions

Does an advisory fail the MOT?

No. An advisory is noted without being the reason that test failed. A later test can still fail for a related defect.

Where do the advisories come from?

The free report uses DVSA MOT history. That is the data source named on the report.
